The 5th P of Electoral Marketing

Superstar Rajinikanth addresses after casting his vote during the South Indian Artists Association’s SIAA Election in

Let me admit this, this post has been long overdue, and procrastination has had an undue effect on this and I thought what better topic than the voter as a consumer. This is the season of election where I am living and my neighbouring state of Kerala.

My professional assignments have taken me to see how the political parties see these voters as consumers and fool them into buying their promise and come up trumps.

So I went back to see how these have evolved in the last few years and how one last election has changed the landscape to a different plane of activity as far as election is concerned.

How do you actually define your consumer. Work backwards, that might be the philosophy.

A party looks at the voter as a consumer. And the best part is the market or the target that it is all about. The product here is a 5-year government that is being sold to a very heterogeneous set of population.

The parties used to profile the market and differentiate in their own way not until the matrix of social studies came into play.

The matrix of 4Ps in play in elections is quite evident from the way they start announcing the candidates. Price, Place, Packaging and Promotion.

First P : Price
The Price here refers to the amount the candidate is willing to pay for the Party quite easily becomes the preference which they think can make up for the rest of the next three Ps. Quite obviously, this took a different dimension in Tirumangalam in Tamilnadu where each voter was given a price say ranging between 1000 – 2000 rupees to cast his vote in favour of a party. This was significant because it was also a bye election. This later came to be known as Tirumangalam Formula and was widely used by the opposition and won elections handsomely.
So what’s a little few crores when you can earn as much and more when you get to power in the next five years.

Second P : Place
The next P is the Place, its actually a suggestion by the Electin commission that makes it a reserved category seat in some cases. But otherwise the candidate needs to be a local. The national Parties are very strict about this sometimes, they believe the son of the soil card can be played to the advantage. So clearly in Kerala when Sreeshant was announced a candidate the opposition which no real issues picked on him as an outsider.

The Place factor also can be historical, say the DMK Stalwart contests from his hometown a bit of psychology and emotional appeal as if the constituency is going to be changed to a capital anytime soon. Mind you need to fool all the people only for that few days when the electoral code is in force.

Third P : Packaging
Let’s move to Packaging, what’s a product without the real deal – packaging, the inherent psyche of the consumer is that however good the product may be it is enhanced to the next level with some packaging and we see how important it is when it comes to FMCGs, I would rank the votes under the same category except that its once in five years.
The Packaging these days have now come to be done by professionals who can crunch data for you and give you a presentation that will floor you down and make it look like a book titled how to win elections by engineering a social divide across caste, community and religion. Again the closest the parties come to is the packaging of the castes, communal and religious overtones in subtle and sublime way that people think its ok for us to be hoodwinked and a sense of righteousness fills them when they are told that they belong to a clan of warriors or fighters or sometimes they will be known for their hard-line stance on caste or community lines.

Fourth P : Promotion
Now let’s talk about promotion. Those were days when you can actually do paid advertising but then today Election Commission thinks it’s got the rights to enforce at least some of the important statues and try to get an un influenced by media election. Of course you can discount the party owned and other media outlets, especially with reference to Tamil Nadu where I belong, I still wonder how Election Commission will be able to ideally have them accounted as a cost.

The last Parliament election made Social Media the darling of every party and the way Narendra Modi used it apart from his whirlwind tours made it an important instrument in his victory.

So we have digital making a great impact and there are different patterns appearing even Meme’s making it to the forefront. Whatsapp, Facebook, twitter are all used extensively to create touch points for communication. Ofcourse there are apps too which are making it happens. The digital with its targeting is making it a wonderful instrument. Even SMSes are being used across.

Fifth P : No guesses Its Prashanth Kishore
Now the post 2014 has given birth to a new P. It’s called Prashanth Kishore and that P has been able to make waves after Mission 2014 Its been easy till now with the Bihar elections in his bag The 5th P in election marketing is on a roll. Time will decide how it will fare in the near future.

The winner needs to get these 4Ps together in appropriate measure according to the place he is working on the ground. Not to forget the 5th P.

Urban has a social media edge meanwhile rural has the other side of offline marketing which also includes bribing with liquor, biriyani and money.

Now you might be asking me what will the consumer here aka the voter get. He gets to be laughed at for another 5 years. 😛

Now in case you are any of the state are in election mode and reading hope you did your sacred duty of voting!

Senthilkumar

PS: Incase you are asking me about the Picture its about an election but yeah nothing to do with the article, as much as citizens plight for the next five years

The Future and the #SmartTrucking phenomena

Mahindra-Navistar-Trucks-Features-and-Price-in-India

Indian roads have come of age and ever since the Golden Quadrilateral took shape the highways have had it the best of times and that meant the automobile drivers had easy task at hand and could deliver better vehicles and concentrate on making it more driver friendly.

The look and feel of the trucks got a makeover and today they are as customer savvy as much as they sell cars. We have seen the likes of many a brand and even the Mercedes, Man Trucks, and  Benz making their presence felt here.

The race to be the best had begun and there is no stopping them now. Mahindra with its #SmartTrucking concept has now started delivering some of the best in class truck options for the sauve consumer.

Some of the features that get a hands up includes great fuel economy, mileage, lesser breakdowns, service guarantee at breakdown point etc. Well technically there is this unique modular cylinders for engines that is responsible for low maintenance and repair cost.

The very thought of the truck is that ‘long drive’ perhaps getting things to people from one part of the country to another. The truck perhaps is a brand ambassador in quite a few places and when we discuss long drives, it has to be without any breakdowns at all, forget lesser break downs.

The long drives make for such an adventure, and when you know you have help at hand you get more confident and enjoy the driving across the terrain of the national highways. The drives have become more picturesque these days and the drivers have become more responsible in a way, and the #SmartTruck is one of the reason, they feel pampered. So #SmartTrucking has you covered when it comes to delivering goods which in turn is delivering happiness, delivering responsibly and delivering trust. And a break down is not just an incident, but reflects on the overall scheme of things and that when you have help at hand. #SmartTrucking doesn’t have break down points but then when there is the most unfortunate thing which happens inspite of you being a responsible driver, well that’s when you appreciate the lesser breakdown and help at hand!

The #SmartTrucking is a travel that is akin to our life journey that we have on this earth. There are places to stop, to reduce the speed, enjoy the road while it lasts and yeah keep looking into the mirror only when needed and yes bring on the better roads as we keep going ahead.

We will love the drive and the way the roads converge and how they look inspiring to lead the way to our destination. The long drives have always have had the philosophical bent of mind.

One of the basic aspects of being inside a truck is the ability to see things far and near. You get to have a view of things in your own style. #SmartTrucking today symbolises the most wonderful way to help those who help us by driving some of the biggest trucks.

Kudos to Mahindra for changing the way Trucks are see, built and deliver.

“I’m writing this blog post for the MTBD #SmartTrucking activity at BlogAdda.”

#TweetToFarmer an initiative by Mother Dairy Milk!

That was simply great to be able to ‪#‎TweetToFarmer‬ courtesy Mother Dairy Milk 🙂

Happy to be featured in the video by way of a tweet and love the happiness of the farmers featured there, without whom we wont have our daily food or rather daily milk!

This was a part of celebrating the Birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien the Man who made the Operation Flood a success that has made India the largest milk producing country in the world.

It feels lovely to see the video and those smiles and heartfelt messages, from them that they will keep them safe and cherish those messages made me overwhelmed. It was humbling to see those faces.

#MotherDairy celebrated India’s Milkman – Dr.Verghese Kurien’s birthday, by connecting urban consumers to the dairy farmers with a social initiative called #TweetToFarmer.

I loved tweeting to Farmers and for all we know we don’t give them their due. Happy to be a part of the video!

Media and its narratives – a sad state of affairs

hashtag3-cc

Watched TV after a long time, especially the news. Felt happy that I was not watching them all this while. So much of distorted reporting.

Sometime in my life, I wanted to be a Journalist, it was the most noble career after teaching, Infact I did take to the stage as a news reporter in my fancy dress competitions quite a few time during school days and rocked the stage at Mock Press during college days. Somewhere felt advertising was a calling and then left the journalistic urge fall by the wayside.

Looking back, now its a revelation in a way,  that the journos were the conscious keepers of the society, and you look up to them. But today its more of a propaganda made right with vested interest and leading questions to get something that they want for TRP. When news channels look at trp you can be sure what goes for a six, the values that instill in a sense of propriety that they owe to the viewers and the country.

I dont want to talk of Radia tapes and other stuff, but you know even in this profession there is this haves and have nots. But the regional players are much better off than their English counterparts when it comes to being committed.

The English media thinks out of the NCR/Delhi and they have no sense about the rural areas. That’s why you have Arushi case being peddled so much to tarnish the image of the investigators and the judges. I was happy to read an article on Ink Magazine about how the English Language media scuttled all that was done by the Noida Police during the first few days.

That the narrative can be led to what they want is the biggest bane that English Language Media has done to the fabric of the nation.

Now with Social Media they are fast losing relevance and very sad that some channels with less than 1% access to the population is dictating the narrative.

More so the worrisome factor is the trends of twitter setting the narrative, some 100 people tweet and make it a narrative. The fact that even 20% of the people dont have access to internet is lost on those who want to talk on every issue under the sun. Talking of which its the media savvy standup comics who are lending the commentary on the society, make it a sorry state of affair.

Hmmm so much to write after a long time. Will get on more frequently!

LiveLodgycal – the Renault Lodgy review

Livelodgycal

Its Goa time, and another blogger meet with another new car!

Its become a habit with Blogadda getting you drive the cars around the picturesque Goa.

So when Harish calls you dont say NO! Who would deny themselves an opportunity to be amongst 40 of the best minds from the country. In a sense these meets have enriched the bond of friendship cutting across the country and have given a different perspective on what blogging is all about and the kind of passion it evokes in each one of us.

Probably I was the first to step out of home, early in the morning given I had to reach Chennai and then get to Goa!

In between the WhatsApp messages and tweets which incidentally was trending for sometime with the #LiveLodgycal hastag, we were getting set to what would be a great event the next two days over the weekend.

I am gonna write about the awesomest gang of the Blogadda in a separate post. Thank you all for such a well planned and well executed eventful meet that we were in. Hmm the prizes were awesome and that was the icing in the cake for those who got them and deservedly so.

So this meet let me tell you was courtesy the Renault India, the car manufacturer with a legacy from France. If you know the SUV which set the market rolling  by the name of Duster then you know who we are talking.

The foreign brands take some time to get to the bottom of Indian mind and heart and so too Renault has captured the imagination of the car lovers with its earlier versions.

This time we got to test the all new Renault Lodgy, well it got to be Lodgycal and turned out to be one.

After reaching the hotel and warm welcome and some unofficial meeting up later we all assembled to listen to what the car or the MPV as it is called is all about.

The evening started on a wonderful welcome note from the teams at Blogadda and Renault India. We also had a wonderful intro session on all the bloggers and the teams present there.

I was a part of the Team Fleeting Four – accompanied by the traveler with the name @payaniga Prashanth, the ever funny Doctor @pythoroshan who blogged one of the serious issues in the country about his profession and the ace photographer and blogger Sammy @deckle_edge.

Renault Lodgy: The Car with a history!

IMG_20150620_085706_HDR

An MPV from the house of the 116 year old company that pioneered the Turbocharger, the first Hatch sedan, or the steering mounted controls to name a few has done a marvel in the way they have taken Lodgy to the Indian Market.

First things first. The Renault are the pioneers of the MPV cars and that lends a special significance when you try out the car and there is an ample evidence of that factor. It shows when a 117 year young company does things its own way.

Be it the turbocharger or the first sedan, the steering mounted controls, the first hatch back or the first gear box, there is history and a legacy to live by.

So let me go by what are some of the unique features:

Monococoque : The F1 fan in me was so happy hearing the monocoque contruction of the MPV Lodgy. It adds to the safety by default. Well you need to know Metallurgy well enough to do that monocoque is a single steel construction of the body.

Diesel Only Option: Diesel is standard in two variants one with 85 PS generating a maximum torque of 200 Nm @ 1900 rpm. Another with 110 PS with a maximum torque of 245 Nm @ 1750 rpm and comes with a 6 gear box. It has shown a great flair by going only diesel in Indian circumstances and the mileage is pretty decent if you go by ARAI. Leaves the competition by a mile.

IMG_2685

Pic Courtesy : Sammy aka @deckle_edge

There is a lot of thought which has gone into the design of the car suiting it to the Indian way. The car has a nice front grill with the logo, and head lamps are pretty and fits nice in the view.

IMG_20150620_085839_HDR

IMG_20150620_104710_HDR

The car is nice and just have a look at the interiors and the dont disappoint, class interiors and nice feel of the seats and good feel on the dashboard. The touch music dashboard – and the controls on the steering are easy to use. Well the indicator and wiper are under left right combination as usual Renault style.

So without much of the writing I am thankful to my team mates for recording this video… all the aspects of the car in these videos!

Hmm its one spacious car and well we have to wait and see what the people have to say about the rear, I loved the lamps at the rear but found it very squarish for all the aero styling in the front. But you know they were the first MPV.

The drive was good probably the first two gears need a bit of response but once you get going you are in for a ride. I can understand the first two gears are for the city driving and getting you out to the highway!

IMG_20150620_150839_HDR

The seat variations and the boot space are very comfortable and India will be all arms wide open welcoming such a family gaadi to their household for sure.

IMG_20150620_150430_HDR

The touch screen navigation system, the reverse gear on board camera and a host of features will make you feel luxurious on the car.

IMG_20150620_115248_HDR

Impressions: Very responsive and a value for money car – spacious and you are sure to get travelling at impulse. It doesn’t sound like a diesel car, check out the Lodgy on a test drive you will agree with me.

I was a part of the #LiveLodgycal Drive by BlogAdda.com in association with Renault India.

Just the moments of togetherness #together

brandcover (3)

I am an eternal optimist and know that I will pull it off. Its only a matter of time before things fall in place. During those moments when you feel that you are on the thin ice not necessarily true to the literal sense, still think you need some one who can say ‘yes that’s the way and don’t worry everything is gonna be alright’. That’s the time.  Those are life changing moments in small measure not so drastic for the world to see,  still needs someone who can say what you want to hear and boost your morale.

I know I can look upto him, my friend. Not much is in common with our careers and personal life. Never the less there seems to be the meeting of minds when we need to discuss and take a decision for good. This is when it matters the most. But we have had our time managed to meet at regular intervals at our favourite places.

At times there would be no talks and at times heated discussions, it all boils down to having to understand the others point of view. But more than that its the belief that there is someone behind you to back up your plan, your thoughts and someone to vet it for you in terms that you never fathomed it.

At times its just the meeting that makes it all worthwhile. Being together and sharing the things would make it easy. That’s kinda I know I can get myself assured feeling and moment.

The best part is this, sometimes its a monologue from my side at a stretch. It could be that we needed someone to listen. Infact helps to be listened to may be. Makes a lot of difference in the way we approach it after someone has heard us and decision is made. It also feels like its being more independent after such a meeting of togetherness.

The other side of it is he is not near these days. His presence is felt when I go to the places where we have been and have had our talks. That those places still seem to buzz on activities make it a nostalgic even today.

And there are times I take a walk all alone at night and then come back refreshed with an answer that has been prodding me. A lone walk with melodious music from the playlist of my mobile will add to the calming effect that is needed for you. There is a talk between one self and it makes you very clear on what the next step should be.

These online activities of Housing.com has certainly opened up a great way to interact with the online community of bloggers. Thanks Housing.com!

The Cricket World Cup the style extravaganza par excellence…

There was once a time when the players played in whites, you had to be really attentive to keep track of them. The style quotient however flamboyant wasn’t really  the way it ought to have looked with the jaded whites not making any impact on the photograph too.

There were days even earlier when the likes of Sir Richards, and Shastri modelling for Only Vimal suitings, well all these off the cricketing action in fact. They had a charm but well all you could watch was that shot and the leg work or sometimes the run up and the action of the bowler.

shashti vimal

Then the colours came in, one day internationals was not jaded in whites, the gentleman’s game was getting some colour on the field literally. then on the colour have ruled the roost in yellow, blues, greens not to mention the maroon.

One of the biggest and closest moments someone came to be associated with style and cricket officially was when the Pakistani President Musharaf requested Dhoni not to cut his long mane – hair during his T20 trophy presentation. Did we hear it right, well fashion and dressing had changed by then. India was in blues, and till day continues to #bleedblue ofcourse of varying shades of blue that is.

Ofcourse the foreign players on a Mohawk haircut or a shaved one would not have been a great sight but Indians team and its players have also started to don some significant changes in their attitude wearing the fashion on their sleeve, er on the head and sometimes the moustache. And when Dhoni did it was news flashy across…

As I write this there are enough reports on the style quotient especially with respect to Shikar Dhawan’s moustache so much that the Gillette is reporting slow down in sales. Just kidding. This is also the target audience’s involvement in fashion that gets reflected in the dressing room.

shikhar-dhawan-moochi-1000x600

I heard Harsha during the commentary during the recent world cup matches on how the Indian boys would have done their haircut in Australia, may be they were helping themselves in the dressing room. Now apart from the way they wield a bat or bowl a fine length its their looks and the hair that have now become the talk of the town ofcourse all these with the performance that they match on ground.

You cannot dismiss the coloring of the hair either. The best of the lot Malinga can look menacing with his colour and add fire power to his pace if you ask me.

Malinga

Colours colours everywhere and to top it all a trimmed hair head in a moments notice and a worldcup trophy – that was Dhoni for you.

207616_163403807051870_100001467560652_386542_6549499_n

The tatoo play: These days we have seen the tatoos with Virat and other players sporting them in a style to match the aggressiveness they sport on the field. It adds to the style quotient without any doubt.

Virat

Its now a game with so much at stake and well if you ask me there is a lot of it with style adding to it.

I am sure we have come a long way. Just take a look at this pic when Kapil Dev and his men won the 1984 worldcup with the then Indian Prime Minister. That almost look like the men are from a corporate club working 🙂

Get Quikr NXT! Chat your way to a sale!

brandcover

SO Quikr is getting quick at innovation. Ask me why, simple the reason why people are getting on with Whatsapp, well you got ! Its the way people are getting to chat, like fish to water.

I have been a user already and some of the best part of the listing have already been detailed in my old blog post.

And when they announced the Chat as a feature I am sure the company has its customers beat with it. Now to the Chat Messenger NXT across the app and the desktop, thats a big leap for a classifieds site to do that a chat as a part of their service at no cost.

quikr_1

So here the screenshot show the NXT at the right hand corner and you are ready to chat away sell or buy things as you chat.

So why is it that great?? you ask me. Let me explain.  Take a look at the screen shot below!

quikr_2

There are many reason but lets take the three which impressed me the most.

1. Real Time : I want to sell it now! Well get on with that on chat. You know you got a customer on line. That’s the easy way it works. You know the party is online and then talk with them once you have initiated the chat.  No need to call and then disturb both ways.

2. Instantly Share Images: Well we all know a picture is worth a thousand words – truly put send them as many angles you want them to see the product and convince themselves before they buy it out. I think this is one of the killer ideas to have in the chat. Any doubt will be laid to rest and they can finalize the deal faster. And yeah it is done with a click as easy it can get.

3. Make your contact details private: Privacy Privacy and privacy! Oh forget that, unless you are a dealer, getting our number online is pretty tough. Open to tele-marketing calls and what not, and you might get calls long after the product is sold and many more instances where you just think why did I have to give my number to everyone even if they wont buy the product at the end of half an hour call!

Now that’s not gonna happen again. You decide to take a call only when you want to finalise for sure. Your number remains yours isn’t that a great way to sell or shop?

Apart from that you can archive the chats and also block unwanted chats too. Now who said you need to shout all the way to sell your products online. Chat your way to selling  or buying something you want to sell / buy.

Welcome to Quikr NXT chat.

A healthy child makes a healthy home!

A healthy child brings us all joy!
A healthy child brings us all joy!

The arrival of the child is one of the most cherishing moments in everyone’s home. That moment is a moment of rejoicing for one and all. I have come across this statement attributed to our People’s President, that that is the only day when our mothers felt happy we cried.

And the journey continues for the child at home, everyone is on their toes literally keeping an eye on the child. For the dads its a new experience and they also get to share those wonderful moments alongside the mother helping her with the upkeep of the child and generally taking turns to make the child sleep, play and indulge.

There is always a feeling of euphoria when the child is around, we would feel the magic in the sounds of the cries, the giggle the very effort it puts to make itself heard and what not.

These days everything gets recorded and what not. In all these, the child’s health is of paramount importance. In earlier days we had the luxury of having our grandparents around us to help the new mother and also take care of the health.

We call it ‘Paati Vaidyam’ in tamil which roughly translates to “Grandma’s Medicine”, it could be a potion mix with herbs and ingredients that are healthy and give us the innate and underlying immunity for the child. But these days without those learned and experienced people around us, its become pretty tough to take care of the child in the early stages.

Aunt & Grandma! They have been a part of growing up for the kids
Aunt & Grandma! They have been a part of growing up for the kids

In case the child becomes unwell, the home will lose its charm, since all the activities used to be revolving around the child. The home will be ill as a matter of fact.

The childs health being of very sensitive import, the immunity build up should be there to assist the child to withstand the external factor that we live in. In earlier days we were used to Ragi and other food especially for the kids and they never had to go to a doctor at any time. Home remedies would be enough to a great extent.

My nephews at play! We are healthy!
My nephews at play! We are healthy!

But times have changed and so too is the environment we live in. The child needs the best of immunity in an indirect way and there is an answer in the form of Dabur Chyawanprash, a time-tested, age-old formulation has a number of herbs like Amla, known to be one of the best antioxidants, Giloy (Guduchi), known to have immuno-modulatory properties, and more than 40 other natural ingredients. Dabur Chyawanprash increases Immunity by 3 times* & hence protects against illness.

In times like ours when we have to be godspeed in our health, its not advisable to take chances on the immunity factor. We have always known the medicinal and curative properties of some of the basic fruits and herbs like that of amla for example.

As I write this would like to give a big thumsup to Dabur for its intiaitve to bring back the goodness of life the natural way and especially starting this at a young age right from being the kids that we were and the other kids who will play in the world in the future.

To know more of this, please visit https://www.liveveda.com/daburchyawanprash/ and you would be glad you did.
