EVC announces $50m fund for Indian startups, plans to invest in IoT, ad-tech and e-commerce

Entrepreneurship & Venture Capital (EVC), a global venture capital firm has announced to invest a fund of $50 million in India. The organisation aims to build and support technology ventures in sectors such as the Internet of things (IoT), mobile space, ad-tech, e-commerce, gaming, wearables and education.

Entreprenuership

The venture capital fund also operates EVC Accelerators in the United States and India where it provides capital and mentorship to help entrepreneurs turn ideas into unicorns.

EVC is likely to invest between $100,000 to $5,000,000 from its fund EVC II in exchange for equity in growth-stage companies that fit its investment criteria.

Anjili Jain, Managing Partner, EVC said,

Today, India has emerged as one of the most assuring entrepreneurial landscapes. We have launched the fund looking at the opportunities that Indian ecosystem has to offer. We also aim to bridge the existing gap in the ecosystem by supporting new businesses that can put India on the global entrepreneurial map.

The VC firm says that it sees IoT, ad-tech, e-commerce, gaming and education are the main sectors where the business growth lie.

According to a report by IDC, the global IoT market is expected to grow to $1.7 trillion by 2020. Devices, connectivity, and IT services are expected to account for two-thirds of the IoT market by 2020. Google has also shown keen interest in this space. In 2014, the search engine acquired smart thermostat maker Nest Labs for $3.2 billion.

Gaming is another potential industry which is waiting to take a giant leap. According to a report, the gaming industry earned a total of $10.5 billion in revenue in 2009. In 2014, that figure quadrupled– the gaming industry had raked in over $46 billion.

The VC firm says that e-commerce is one of the sectors which holds the largest business potential; and it’s impossible to avoid this sector. Besides, various studies have also predicted the potential growth in the e-commerce sector. Recently, as per industry body Assocham, the e-commerce industry in the country is likely to be worth $38 billion by 2016, a 67 per cent jump over the USD 23 billion revenues for 2015.

Early investment

During February this year, EVC supported Telecom Centres of Excellence (TCOE) with $ 4 million for its Innovation in Mobile App Development Ecosystem (I-MADE) program.

Innovation in Mobile App Development Ecosystem (I-MADE) framework is a 5 year program in which one hundred (100) institutes will be selected to be a part in Phase I of the program. Phase II will include up to 3000 institutions. The goal of the program is to help Indian entrepreneurs build 1 million mobile app start-ups which can eventually become Indian unicorns.

The New Wave of Entrepreneurship

There is a multi-trillion dollar economy opening up to technology faster than ever. It has been driven by trends that have changed the nature of how entrepreneurs will be characterized going forward; specifically, industry executives will be the next wave of in-demand startup CEOs.

In April of 2007, Apple changed everything with the launch of the iPhone. It is hard to imagine that it has only been 8 years since the release of the first truly pervasive smartphone, but there is no denying its impact has been world-changing. Beyond the creation of a new dimension of industry-driven, by location-based, services (and with it, a myriad of billion dollar companies), an equally significant phenomenon emerged. By creating technology that was intuitive to the consumer masses, every person around the world started to embrace technology as more than just a work tool. Lawyers, doctors, car mechanics and people from every sector of the economy not only had a tool for productivity, but a piece of technology in their pocket they embraced as an intimate part of their lives.

Furthermore, these new consumers could now point to a standard for usable technology. Cumbersome, enterprise legal software that won’t allow a lawyer to search cases from outside the office is no longer acceptable. For those outside of the Silicon Valley silo, conversations can be heard from construction workers sitting on a lunch break saying “Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an app to …”. Unfortunately, these conversations are often too far away from Silicon Valley’s ears, which are still dominated by the talk of what will be the next WhatsApp or Instagram. Even so, a new breed of entrepreneur is emerging who see firsthand the challenges in their industry, and with that the opportunity to make a world-changing impact, and these entrepreneurs do not fit the founder archetype that many Silicon Valley investors look for.

Previous decades saw similar shifts in entrepreneur characterizations. The late 90s were about Harvard MBAs applying traditional management techniques to leverage brand new Internet technologies. The “aughts” brought on the “22 year-old Stanford Computer Science” graduate applying technology to a low hanging industry. Now, in this decade, we are seeing a new wave of entrepreneurship driven by industry executives with deep product backgrounds leveraging technology to disrupt a traditionally non-tech industry.

For the past 2 years I’ve had the opportunity to see this shift firsthand as the managing partner of Silicon Valley Software Group (SVSG), a firm of CTOs focused on helping companies with their technology strategy. SVSG has seen entrepreneurs ranging from movie producers, lead singers of platinum album rock bands, travel executives, and hedge fund managers all trying to figure out how to leverage their domain expertise through technology. After a number of similar engagements, a few observations have emerged:

  • In each venture, a product-focused entrepreneur saw the adoption of technology among their peers in a particular industry and, with that, the opportunity to create a product focused on that industry.
  • None of these entrepreneurs had notable tech experience.
  • Hardly ANY of these high profile individuals had relevant connections with the Silicon Valley community.

This last observation is of particular importance!

As tunnel-visioned as Silicon Valley might be, there is a reason that it has produced so many world-changing companies.

The combination of growth capital, multidisciplinary talent, and mentors sharing best practices around how to create hyper-growth businesses are often taken for granted by those who are part of the ecosystem. However, the disconnect between Silicon Valley natives and outsiders is shocking. Many of the companies SVSG has come across have no ability to raise strategic capital at first because their businesses are too risky when considering common pitfalls they are more likely to fall into compared with their Valley peers. Concepts as commonplace as the lean startup methodology are welcomed as sage insight to these new entrepreneurs.

What is missing for these new founders is a bridge into Silicon Valley. To date, this has been stymied by a narrow mindset from the Silicon Valley community. However, the forces of capitalism will eventually prevail and these new entrepreneurs will find their own community to center around. Keen investors will lead the herd and take advantage of existing markets ripe for change. Incubators and accelerators will emerge with afocus on entrepreneurs with deep industry experience. We are in a tech boom right now and there are countless ways to apply technology to industries that haven’t changed in decades. For those sitting in the corner office, the time has come to venture out, there are markets to disrupt.

What India reads! A page on Flipkart app

The book lovers have a new tool, well a page on their book section on their favorite shopping app  from folks at Flipkart. The book was the first love of flipkart, well things have changed but then they have tried to please you the book reader with this page!

“What India Reads” is all about what you read or would like to read. The app is designed basis genres for now and will soon feature what celebrities and authors read as well.

The idea of the app is to make readers aware of what books are right at the top and also to help them discover books they might have not known of earlier. There are sections to it, the genres and you could check out the books on the shelf, read about it and well get to buy them ofcourse.

The chances are you can check out the best of the titles and the promising ones, as you see the title rise to prominence in a day or so post launch.

There is an all book offers that will let you know what are the offers that you have at the present moment.

I was wondering on a title Aarushi under Autobiographies, may be it was a a mistake so i clicked on it to find the Autobiography titles there. Not Aarushi.

The pages instead of going to normal pages at Flipkart could be better be designed to the flow of the app interface for the What India reads page and continue with the shopping experience. I am thinking native probably because of my work and professional background.

Another aspect could have been that they have a notification for you to check the What India reads page updation of new titles so that I get to go there quite often.

A nice attempt from Flipkart, hope it helps the readers in you and me and as a start it definitely looks nice to have it.

Airtel rolls out 4G with a challenge for a lifetime!

This is definitely a great news in more ways than one. India just shifted gears officially so to say with Airtel going 4G. This will open up a new set of internet users who are on the move and have always wanted speed more than anything else.

The best part here is the definition of speed, some of my test with Airtel across the country have given me speeds at 35Mbps imagine a 100 Mb file downloaded in 4 seconds! And rendering a HD video without any buffering and smooth as butter loading and you wont know the full movie is up for you to see.

Now the best part is I have been using 4G for sometime and have had different experiences across different parts of the city – reference is Coimbatore here and some places away from the city say Goa too.

The testing was on a Galaxy A5 and a Mi4i handsets.

IMG_20150710_185312_HDR

As I have already told you this is better than those early days and I did have some difficulty in connecting to normal voice at times when they might have been working on the migration part.

So you want to know how the world will change for you with 4G here’s the TVC that was unveiled today!

The pricing is the key probably for us in India we are very price conscious at every thing that we come across, kitna deti hai types. But the catch is its at the same 3G price.

The thing is we would be easily be driving the bandwidth usage given that 4G can drive upto 30 plus Mbps and thats just 10 instances of 100 Mb downloads for 1 Gb usage!

But you know the life changes for you with so much speed you can do a lot more things faster and take time off for yourself. The transfers that we had officially has now become easier than ever and have time to stretch ourselves for a chai at the canteen.

I think we have been lucky to transfer ourselves from 3G which we have not seen the full potential and to 4G is as insane as it can get. This will have real impact on education and health and other important applications and that can have far reaching impact on the society. I look forward to the positive things that this can drive about.

The consumption of video thats happening and the information search will be interesting to see and how this can enable a brand to reach out to the customers is a big challenge that I can foresee. This is a nice opportunity that way for every one trying to reach out with the power of 4G.

Welcome to a new life of 4G and I have a word of caution, the speed are too hot to handle in literal sense that you would have finished your quota of 2Gb 3G bandwidth in no time!

A colleague of mine went without internet on data mode for 5 days because of testing 4G and exhausting the data! But yeah revel in it till the prices hold to the 3G days!

It almost looks like 3G was so very slow, ask me I started with the 128 kbps telecom connection some 15 years back, upgraded to ISDN courtesy my work at a medical transcription unit and then to the normal broadband, mobile 2G then the 3G which was not fully utilised.

Even the cat look on!

Airtel 4G in Coimbatore – a review

You would be glad to know that Bharti Airtel has launched 4G yes you heard it right 4G in our Covai city. Thats a great speed news since the compelling response Airtel has had from customers in Chennai, Vellore and they will now go spreading the 4G network across rest of Tamil Nadu.

In a world where the Maslow’s Hierachy has been redefined with the access to charging a battery and internet as basic even below the daily needs, it must come as a great relief that 4G is atlast here.

Maslow_2014_revised

To give you an idea what 4G can do for you, there is no buffering and imagine downloading 10 movies in half an hour, yes 10 HD movies if you will! Add to that uploading your fav selfies and photographs to the facebooks and instagrams of the world in a flash.

The speeds are F1 paced swwosh and your download is done, this time the coffee will remain as hot as served. Be warned.

Now here is the best part to be a part of this at the same rates atleast initially as I hope so, you get 4G at the 3G rates! Enjoy as much as you can, and all you need to do is walk into an Airtel stores across Coimbatore and ask for a 4G sim and well you need to have a 4G enabled handsets.

Some of the common handsets include, Motorola’s Moto E 4G which can be purchased from Flipkart, don’t forget to get a 500 cashback on the same. Airtel has also ties up with Samsung offering a definite 4G plan along with 4g enabled handsets. It is also reported that Samsung is looking to launch its all new Core Prime 4G mobile smart phone in Airtel 4G markets.

Thanks to Airtel, I was one of the few enlisted to enjoy the power of 4G in Coimbatore. Armed with a 4G wifi dongle that can connect upto 10 devices and a Samsung Galaxy A5 handset and fully loaded data, I set to explore what’s 4G speed all about.

As I write this there is a disclaimer that the infrastructure is in the process of being done and this is a pilot happening and they are trying to make it better may be as you complete reading this piece.

I loved the cute handy design of the 4G wifi modem. It can be on the move for upto 6 hours when fully charged. Being on the power its stays fit.

IMG_20150614_224000_HDR

Now to the speeds and the overall experience. The moment I got hold of the handset and the modem, the first thing I did was to post it on Facebook and that elicited a response for a Ookla speed test!

And here we go: at two different places in Coimbatore – Veerakeralam some 500 metres off Marudhamalai road in particular is the first picture:

Speedtest.net by Ookla The Global Broadband Speed Test

The result was 6.12 Mbps which meant you could download a 60 Mb file in 10 seconds flat, a 600 mb file in 100 seconds flat!

The second one in a span of two days at Ramanathapuram – Trichy Main Road near Olumbus.

Speedtest.net by Ookla The Global Broadband Speed Test_2

Well the first impression was Wow thats great and on second thought dil maange more! 😛 Need more and today bandwidth is in the gold category where you always need more!

But as for as the videos on youtube and other players it was seamless and there was a initial buffer but once the video started there was no buffering. Downloads of apps and games was superfast, well to be frank I did download, Angry Birds and some Candy Crush stuff to check the speed. Some of the video based apps also worked better in this.

Like I said initial days, and this can be a normal stuff and that is great news, simple because it can only get better from here. Well that’s what people at Airtel seems to be working on getting you better bandwidth and better surfing experience.

I want to thank the folks at Airtel for giving me this opportunity to try out the service at Coimbatore.

Before I close, this is the first installment of the review, await another in a weeks time, and in the meanwhile you want to know what Airtel 4G LTE is all about please click here:  http://www.airtel.in/4g/

Senthilkumar

PS: I had been to Goa and we saw 4G modem work seamlessly across some places where even though the reception was a bit down.

I have been to New Delhi too and that made me really pity Coimbatore but yeah I am sure the folks at Airtel are waiting to give us the same speed. Please DO!  🙂

For those who want to know how fast 4G can be take a look at the screen shot below at an Airtel Store in New Delhi.

Digital India in your hands! #DigitalIndia

mainbanner

Satish has just got into his 9th class and he knows he needs the most important certificate at this point in life. He went to the District information Center, he took the help of the clerk uncle as he called him to fill the form and gave it to him. He was told to come in the evening and pick up the certificate.

Late evening he shows the community certificate to his dad who is surprised that it was so easy and wondering how tough it was for his elder son some 5 years ago. Earlier in the day he had accessed the online registration of his land documents and they were in the pipeline and he was happy he needn’t go around post and pillar to get his details about the property he was considering to purchase.

Come to think of such things, the passport application has become seamless and it was a breeze last week for his nephew who came from the nearby town to appear at the Passport Information office. Surprise the Passport had arrived before he left to his hometown after 4 days  and he picked it up the next day.

The AADHAR card has come to be the center of all this citizen centred initiatives. The neighbourhood colonies are now availing their PDS from the ration shop with such rationing only to be used by genuine users. The GPS and MIS systems in place has now made it easy to track the movement of goods for public distribution and also gets the realtime data so that there is logistics in full control.

Elsewhere the roll out of the GST and computerisation and digitisation of the toll booths and commercial check posts has now made the transport of goods seamlessly possible across the country.

Now even the issuing of license and other RTO works have become online and it’s just very simple with the online systems in place and no touts to work with.

The best part is the IRCTC becoming fast and agile and the booking of tickets becoming a breeze. The ticket booking status has become commonplace with the social added to the ticketing procedure.

The citizens today can keep tab /track of their ward / constituency development activities on their mobile phones. The citizen connect initiative has the financials very clearly marked and the work in progress being very clearly laid out for the citizens to take action if there is a delay.

The police connect data has the details on the policemen responsible for areas and there has been dramatic decrease in law and order issues and also the centralised police database which was long pending has changed the way the police work at the state level and the national level not to mention the way they work at the local level.

The Information highway right from the panchayat level to the prime minister’s office is today very transparent and when it started with the open attendance system it has become all the more accountable for whatever the citizen is paying in taxes.

The centralised Road transport digital initiative has made the e-checkpost work efficiently and also book road offenders without an opportunity  to briber police and the offences are tagged on the social media too making them little conscious of what they are upto.

Now there are no long queues outside  govt offices and the govt is becoming effective digital governance platform with the help of a lot of companies and individuals like Intel and making it happen for the citizens and the govt is now making it easier for the citizens to see the result of their hard work and also see for themselves how their hard earned money as taxes is being spent.

The rural folk are the happiest since now every one has a bank account and that started off the credit revolution to needy individuals and agriculturalists, since they can be given the cash transfer effectively and there is no spill in the value chain especially when it comes to relief and subsidies. This has made the subsidy bill go down drastically since its only the deserving set of people being paid and cutting a whole chain of intermediaries.

(Unveiling of Digital Skills India in Dec last year. Pic courtesy: http://www.techvorm.com/ )

All these at the village level were achieved through the Intel’s Digital Skills for India’ programme where in the villagers were made ready for the oncoming digital world. Now everyone is getting impacted to the digital India that the Govt wants. The village has become more healthy and more clean with the digital literacy catching up with the villagers and the kids participating in full enthusiasm.

Satish had thought this was all a dream come true since he has always been hearing that in India the corruption will rule forever and for once he was proved wrong and how.

A #DigitalIndia is now a reality and its happening under the aegis of Intel, powering the entire generation… and changing it for the better.

I am sure our people had the foresight when they said ‘Vasudeva Kutumbakam’ so very early and probably digital  is making it happen more so than ever before making the world one family.

Whoever would have thought if we could do all these in a click of a button or a talking in their language with a Micromax tab.

There was a sense of exuberance and a sense of elation when you wear it and feel the power and also the right fit. With this I am sure they have taken the MY FIT to the level that they had envisaged. This I am sure will change the way Power Dressing is done from now onwards. Bringing you closest to the perfect fit that you have always wanted from Van Heusen.

I am not adding more screenshots here, please visit the site for yourself and I am sure you will amazed and end up buying for sure. Let me also add you can order the same at the store too with all the specification for the fabrics that you want. A way of touch and feel with respect to the clothing that you are looking for.

MYFIT is surely a comfort and a custom fit par excellence.

My sincere thanks to folks at Indiblogger, for this awesome activity and being a part of this Van Heusen power dressing campaign – MYFIT.

Lunchboxed on a valentines day #lunchboxANDyou

Well, let me tell you my friends, I never thought I would be writing this post. Seriously!

Until I was browsing the Indiblogger mail, may be that happened for a reason and possibly it was destined

Valentine’s day has never been my cup of tea. For someone who believes that every moment could be a valentine’s moment, all you need was to be in that realm of mental happiness be in touch and you know they are there for you. Someone who thinks telepathy happens for a reason.

But then times changed. I was introduced to her by my parents. On that day I didn’t even speak to her.  You know the way it works in the arranged marriage types. Every one talked. except may be us.

The beauty of relationship is in understanding things without having to say sometimes. I think that happened, and soon we started talking and today we are engaged.

So when everyone asks me how often do you call, I say sometimes, and those times are when there is a connect to say things and get to know us better. And that sometimes could be everyday or alternate days.

There is this acceptance of the dual nature that we are in our work, the way I have been with many companies in my career and she with just one all 14 years! A very digital and socially affable me against a minimal presence online from her side.

I now know there need not be common grounds in a relationship, possibly that would actually open up new points to understand the better of the other person. The beauty of a relationship is in understanding the other person, accommodating them in your world without reservations.

And talking of food, she loves chicken – always has a big taste for anything chicken, so I thought she could have some butter chicken and some biriyani for the lunchbox.  So this Valentine’s Day would be remembered for sure. The Lunchbox will be a memory of the bonding between us.

And a note, a very small one at that…
