Khardung-La Chronicles – Day 3 Part 1

Two days of acclimatization should be enough for us and the D-day is fast approaching with the car having arrived a little close to the venue and the Driver for the event in town. Neel Jani has arrived and well it is going to be real great with him at the venue.

We also have the acclimatizing happening for Neel so he can make the best of the Project without any problems healthwise. F1 drivers are the most fittest in terms of physical fitness and that would be great to see how he takes it to himself at this weather. Though the conditions are a bit European, in terms of weather the altitude here is altogether a different ball game.

As a part of the helicam again this time we went to the Famous Leh Palace. A winding road from the market place and a nicely laden tarmac led us to reach the Leh Palace.

Leh Palace is nine storeys high; the upper floors accommodated the royal family, the stables and store rooms were in the lower floors. The palace, a ruin, is currently being restored by the Archaeological Survey of India. The palace is open to the public and the roof provides panoramic views of Leh and the surrounding areas. (Courtesy Wikipedia)

We had ample shot being taken to accommodate the aerial view and also the a fact that some construction work was going on. ASI has taken it upon itself to restore the glory of this monument. It amazes me to see how they had built it in the first place and how it did have an overall view of the whole country side from the windows.

With lot of onlookers at our side we had tough time to shoot without being disturbed by young and pretty faces. Well I should admit the people here are beautiful like what Baksh of Red Bull said they are happy and that makes them beautiful

I am happy with the fact that apart form technicalities I am learning a bit of life lessons, on how to look at life, meditation, and more so be content and happy, some traits of Buddhism.

As we would up the shoot which were ofcourse the handiwork of Tomas and Renata, we went next to the road to the Tsemo where again it was an awesome view of the countryside. It meant the planning has been meticulous and it also meant that it was easy to control. All the management theories were plain visible in terms of a kingdom being run. Not a fiary tale but in reality these were some of the take-aways.

We did shoot till Lord Vayu decided to stop us with his windy breeze and sun also got the better of us. The afternoon was a different one and I have decided to dedicate a separate blog for that. My time of my life with Neel and what an evening it was, mind blowing simple because you had someone so wonderful and down to earth and always smiling talking to you about the other side of racing the normal human being that Neel Jani is.

Over to the next blog.

Khardung-La Chronicles – Day 2

So what better way to begin a day with yesterdays’s memories? My initiation into the Red Bull family started the night we landed here. Very affable and helping team, and more so focused on job at hand and fire fighting some minor unforeseen issues, the team was all pepped up to make the most of the project at hand, driving an F1 car at Khardung La, some 18300 odd ft above MSL.

This is not a project done in haste yesterday but one which has been planned over a period of over six months and getting approvals and clearance et al, and now we were closer to reality some few days away from history being made.

The morning was warm and the sun was hot, you should expect sun to be closer to you and he could easily tan you to the darkest of the color. And well if you wanna read about the term acclimatization and more importantly about medical advice please read here.

The teams on the production side were divided into two. Before I go further allow me introduce the crew – Case Productions under Selim.

This team has the rare distinction of shooting for over 30 days at Antartica and that too was for Red Bull. A very energetic and an enthusiastic team was already at work. They take their fun at work too seriously I bet.

Getting back I was going to travel with the Helicam team for generic visuals across some of the finest tourist destinations in Leh. The team had a lovely couple in Tomas and Renata hailing from Poland and Berk from Case Production to help them out.

Accompanying us was the ever smiling Mr. Sonam Dorje, the Asst Director of Tourism in J&K.

Our first stop of the day was the Holy Fish Pond Lake adjoining the Shey Palace.  After few minutes of walking around the pond and the road to the palace, the first shot was setup on the helicopter-camera.

The helicam went soaring up in air Red Bull had literally given it the wings. Tomaz took a nice trajectory hovering the monastery almost setting up a shot when accidentally the pigeons flew all at once.

I was training myself with a camera my brother Sashi sent me. Some nice shots of the Palace and the heli-cam in air.

Next we proceeded to the Thiksey Monastery, further on the same road, it was visible from a distance and we took a little road to go to the place. Up on a hillock, the monastery had an imposing structure and a grand design. The F1 car would start from here, and the monks here would bless with their venerable presence.

It was a challenging shot for the team and they took almost two hours in finalizing three shots from three different directions.

It held the young monks in awe when they saw the helicam on air. It was nice capturing them on the camera for me. On the way back sun on top helped to record some of the finest stupas on heli-cam.

It was lunch time at Hotel Grand Dragon.

The Red Bull Racing team – (F1 show car Team) was awaiting the arrival of the car in the mean time and they were the ones  truly acclimatizing to put it in perspective.

Well you know you can’t exert yourself more and thus we had the first day of shoot! A truly successful trip at that and happy awaiting what’s in store for tomorrow. The car would have arrived so too was the driver Neel Jani!

Khardung-La Chronicles – Day 1

A secret location and a secret mission was all so cinematic and the travel part added to it. The plane just about flying low if you know the land is the almost 12000 ft above MSL.  As we descend to the highest altitude Airport of Leh, both sides out of the window looked like out of the world. Mountains covered in the snow and rocks in formation and clouds all below us. The flight looked tantalizingly navigating a route amidst the snow clad mountains and lakes. We were very near to the ground in real. Looking out of the window we could see them crystal clear.

The plane did one roundabout of a hillock and touched very neatly on the ground and what a small run way it was. This airport is also the base for the Indian Air Force.  A nice landing done and a chill weather welcoming us, the view was breathtaking as we got down the plane. I am sure the view from the cockpit should be breathtaking. And for someone who had just finished the two parts of Amish ‘s novels – Immortals of Meluha  and the Secret of Nagas, it was like looking at the Kailash and other from above and I could imagine them snow clad and people living in such places.

The temperature was 13 degree C.  We were led to a smallest airport possibly, with a smallest luggage belt. The oxygen levels were also about 20% to 30% less. This would make you pant literally. So you should even watch your steps to keep yourself from exerting too much!

After the luggage being cleared, we headed to the Hotel Grand Dragon where the RBR Team was put up. Post an initial briefing on the climate and how to keep ourselves fit in the high altitude and how to react to certain possibilities, then we went further to our place Hotel Ladakh Resort.

It was a scenic view from the hotel and my window opened to the Shanthi Stupa and the mountains on the other side.

The most important part on this trip is getting acclimatized. This is important for the visit for anyone simply because it helps you to enjoy the days you had planned without any further medical problems.

So the message was clear, get set to acclimatize for a day or two, keep yourself to your hotel, travel less and let the plan begin to take shape on day 2 or day 3 preferably.

This being a first of a kind visit for me personally, I decided not to take any risk for there was something which I felt I did not want to miss for a lifetime and I decided to take it one step at a time. And the journey has just begun.

Red Bull goes all out to make Rajpath India’s Speed Street

Watt a day it has been, electrifying to say the least! Today was the day when India’s capital witnessed the fury of F1 machines in real power and had a taste of things to come for the Inaugural Indian GP at the Buddh International Circuit in the last week of October! May I also tell you that this post is going to be long.

It was pretty long day at office for the Team Red Bull Racing and its engineers and technicians. On the other side was the production team getting ready with setting up their cameras, av and their editing suite.

The venue had been spruced up for the event and thanks all to the wonderful cooperation of the Delhi Police it was impeccable to start with from the word go.The security drill took its time but the police were on dot on the security for the event, a full dress rehearsal went on for quite sometime before the event actually started.

On the sidelines of the F1 event, Red Bull had organized a multicity event called Red Bull Racing cans. The students were to design a car using Red Bull cans on a chassis provided by the organisers. The event was a big hit among the engineering students and I had the opportunity to visit the Delhi leg at IIT Delhi a few days back.

Red Bull Racing Can is a university racing series. 12 teams compete per location on a set course with custom remote control cars. But to ensure fair play, the chassis of all cars are the same. It’s the body of the racers, aerodynamics and particularly design that make the difference. And that’s where tin metal joins the race! The body, aerodynamic features and design will be made of Red Bull cans. Because when it comes to the scores in this race, a can can make a difference!

The cars were remote controlled and were to go through the circuit laid out for them, it was race simulation with remote control.  You also had the same race week end style here. Practice sessions, then qualifying individually on the track and then the race together in style. You should watch it actually to see that.  Sometimes it resembled the first corner of a real race.

In the finals too there was a scramble at the start with cars getting into one another and the best team which had a clear track ahead of them won, very easy at that, but not easy to navigate and maneuver the corners or the one car that’s on track which the marshals cannot remove them.

The finals had 12 laps and the teams were raring to go and all the enthusiasm goes to the brink and there is a false start even before the word go is uttered. Getting back to start again this time it was perfect, start but there was a park created right near the start of the grid, and the cars wriggled out to make way through the track.

After some twists and turns in literal sense some cars made headway while one car got stuck some problem with the control and one car was pretty slow too. Amidst some loud cheering from the fellow participants and update on the number of laps, the race was over when the first team in Race Dynamics won it in a cool fashion. A chance to represent India at the Red Bull Racing Can World Finals at Red Bull Racing HQ Milton Keyes awaits them. For the record, Race Dynamics team’s Race Driver is Binoy John and the Technical Director is Rahul Saran. Congratulations Race Dynamics, Bangalore!

Getting back to the main event Red Bull Speed Street, the media was in full attendance to capture the glimpse of the car roaring down the Rajpath. As time sped fast, the dignitaries from the Ministry of Tourism started arriving. It should also be noted that they had made a difference in projecting India as a tourist destination with this event.

Very Happy to be here for the event. This event is a testimony of our efforts to promote tourism!  – The Minister of Tourism, Shri Subhokant Sahay

The hero of the day Daniel Riciarrdio had arrived, and he did arrive in style and it was an understated one if you ask me, very cool ever smiling and made him a darling of the crowd as he touch a chord in a truly Punjabi style with some Bhangra steps when he was led into the crowd and back to the paddock.

I would miss it if I didn’t mention the Bhangra team also had him in a huddle for a couple of minutes, may be taught him a couple of moves, will soon see him do it in the world stage.

He had already won the hearts over even before donning the racing suit. The preparations were all ready to go, the car getting ready and revved up. Final touches on the with ice cubes being set inside the radiator box.

So as the final preparations to were on the Delhiiites were treated to some awesome stunts by the Ghost Ryderz a five member team of bikers who held the audience in rapt attention. They left the audience spell bound with raised front wheel and another one raised with its back wheel. Someone rode atop the seat and someone was sitting at the edge of the bike. They too smoked tyres and set the pace for things to come.

It is pure stunt and can only be done by professionals and so don’t try to imitate them at any part of the road or your home.

Now it was the time for the Renault the long time engine partner for Red Bull to take center stage. The Drift Team with its six Koleos cars went on a first ride on the Rajpath.  Controlled aggression and more over speed and agility was hallmark of the show when they did a line up to set it in.

On the reverse gear they set a meeting of cars impeccably turning into a minimum radius and gathering steam. You would be surprised to know that they were all automatic cars that did the classic drive.

The stage was all set now as Indian Ocean performed for the crowd and as the music ended, the RB7 car was pushed from the paddock to the main Speed Street, the car revved and roared and made for music to the audience assembled there. No sooner had the car appeared there were lots of cameras in tow to take a shot at.  It was a match of getting the car in your camera and no! you were not going to make it happen.

I tried once and knowing that it was not possible decided to watch the beauty of the car speeding up the Rajpath with my own eyes, what a beauty it was to see the car and more so the speed with it raced off left only sound to be followed. Wish light also travelled slower.

Daniel Ricciardo set the straight line speed at over 270 kmph and did a classic turn at both ends and finished it with a donut as he locked it up at the center of the track and burnt rubber. He did also perform a donut at the other end too to the delight of the crowd.  The crowd went crazy after this and what a day it has been for Delhiites. Absolutely ‘once in a lifetime’ for them to see them up close and feel the revs and sounds of an F1 car in the main part of their city.

Daniel took his car out three times and all the three times had the crowds clamoring for more. But this is just the tip of what’s in offer especially given the fact that this is a public road and there are limitations but he did exploit all that to the core, setting the road on fire and there are marks on the road which will be gone in a few days but not the memory that he fired up the whole afternoon on Oct 1st at Rajpath for the Red Bull Speed Street.

The crowd was awesome and I enjoyed being here and driving on Rajpath, thank You! – Daniel Ricciardo

He also obliged a quite a few fans with autographs and shot pictures of them on their mobile cameras and you should have seen the happiness in their face and hearts. On a tougher day than a race weekend, Daniel slipped into roles from being the dancer to a F1 driver to a celebrity who knew how to connect with the fans and the media. This is one prelude that one will remember for long, as much as close to the Indian GP happening so near in Delhi. And thanks Daniel a big thanks from all of us from India! We loved it absolutely, and it was great hosting you!

We also had a wonderful guest in VJ Rann Vijay Singh and a surprise guest in Rajesh Kukunoor who is in Delhi to promote their film MOD.

Rann Vijay Singh felt this event has built up the buzz for the F1 in India and going by crowd reaction its going to be great at the Indian GP.

In other news, it was a privilege to be on camera with the Red Bull Production team, thanks a lot to Ismet and the whole team. It was a proud moment to be on a roll with the iconic India Gate in the background. Felt very very happy, Red Bull does gives you wings for sure!

Red Bull: Drive Safe is the message!

Its day 2 in Delhi and the main attraction today was the assembling the Red Bull F1 car, all from scratch, fully putting it together for the race day if you may call it tomorrow. And the media had a great time covering the event.  You just had the chassis, and then everything else being added to get the car in shape, suspension, wings, nose cone, tyres…and the speed with which they did amazed the onlookers.

The engine revved and set the decibels going high! Even the engineers held the hand to their ears as the engine fired. Have a look at the picture gallery here. http://www.redbull.in/cs/Satellite/en_IN/Gallery/RED-BULL-SHOW-CAR-FIRING-@-ITC-MAURYA-021243094738915

Mr Antony Ward, Brand manager of the Red Bull Racing team is down here for the RB Speed Street event.

So for all of you thinking this is just a demonstration of the F1 prowess of the RBR team, hold on its also the commitment that F1 drivers have to safe driving and more importantly that of RBR team championing the need for safe driving.

And who better to partner in this endeavour to promote safe driving, of course the Delhi Police, and they were all support in the organization of the event.

Mr. Antony Ward echoed these sentiments when he said ‘Safety cannot be underestimated anytime, anywhere. We take safety extremely seriously, and that is why we have a strong safety record on track which has led us to driver and constructors titles.’

He also said that this is a historic setting for Red Bull to be racing in the backdrop of this iconic and grand monument of India Gate.

The Commissioner of Police, said that this a wonderful opportunity to see the F1 car being raced at Rajpath and also the message of driving safe in the city will reach enmasse with this event.

The police had already issued some traffic guidelines and reiterated the same today during the Press Conference at the India Gate. Its also been advised to use public transport to come to the venue as it would be difficult to park a lot many vehicles coming to the event.

So welcome all as Red Bull Racing team gears to host its first Red Bull Speed Street in Delhi, you also have a lot of entertainment lined up as curtain raiser to this mega event.

There is Indian Ocean performing tomorrow, you have two wheeler stunts performed to a precision by team Ghost Ryderz and a drift show by Renault Drift team.

Here’s your pick of the day! Do you know that research has consistently show that RedBull Energy drink helps increase performance, alertness ands mental awareness and the best part is during driving its is also known to aid driver awareness and reduce road fatigue. In short gives you wings!

The Indian GP is finally here!

It’s been a long time since I blogged especially in the event of the official announcement of the Indian Grand Prix. Its Airtel which has bagged official rights to be the Presenting sponsor, there are other brands as well which will make it to the fore in the days to come. Vodafone will have its presence in the grid with McLaren Mercedes!

The ticket sales started on Saturday with two of the service providers in Bookmyshow.com and Jaypeesports.com and in a matter of hours they had sold over 10,000 tickets. A big number for Indian standards and this will only grow larger and the online tickets are set to get sold at the earliest opportunity.

While this has ushered in the required media frenzy and the much awaited factor are that of the Indian driver’s presence on the grid. Narain Karthikeyan has said he will do the first Indian GP in front of the Indian crowd, Karun was non committal and said he will be in for the date with destiny on the appointed day.

While I write this Bruno Senna has had a call to replace Heikki at Lotus which augurs well for Karun also.

The best news came today when Mercedes announced the starting of a F1 drivers Academy which is the third one of its kind outside Europe. Imagine being trained by God of the universe, Micheal Schumacher in some days at Indian Soil. This is one great step forward because it comes close on the heels of Force India F1’s Driver hunt titled One from a Billion. This shows the intensity of the brand to involved at the grass roots level of the sport in a country which is half younger than 40 years of age.

This event will usher in a lot of economic activity around the circuit and a lot of employment will be generated in events and sports management for sure. The grandeur of a formula 1 race and the high growth factor of the Indian economy will be a potent combination which can work wonders if streamlined in a proper way.

Its been a long wait for the Indian F1 fan and it looks worth the wait for the crowd what with 12 teams out there to showcase the prowess in a brand new circuit which is supposed to be extra wide at corners to encourage overtaking!
So get set for the most happening sporting extravaganza India has ever seen!
