Narain Karthikeyan back in F1!

The news of Narain Karthikeyan getting back to F1 made up for an almost lost opportunity to have an Indian driver don the tricolors during the inaugural Indian Grand Prix this October. Watching it from close quarters, it was a foregone conclusion that Narain would be the best bet. I would have preferred him drive a Force India F1 any day, but lets get back to reality.

When I met him a couple of months back, the same questions popped up, whats are the plans like, hows he liking the NASCAR drive, et all. As we conversed, we knew this year is will be more emotional than ever, may be far more than the 2005 year start at Melbourne. I still remember he had Michael Schumacher in his mirror. He felt this is also a very important for us in India to showcase what we can achieve, in terms of Infrastructure and as a nation with a sporting culture what we can pull off especially when its the first Indian GP. The dream of having an Indian driver at the Indian GP is now a reality.

It is a long dream come true, that its there finally on the calendar, we were close to a Hyderabad F1 track way back if I should say, but we never know how political equations can hinder or bolster things up. Then waiting for almost last three years on tow and this years officially being up there near New Delhi in Noida.

Its great to see the place coming up at a brisk pace, and will get ready to host the event. The Commonwealth Games last year, sans the corruption story was a great reminder that India can host the best given an opportunity. We can be sure that Indian GP will also be an event which will change the way F1 looks at Indian market for sure.

Now we have three people to cheer, two FF1 cars and one HRT, and if you thought we will be spoilt for choice, its not simply true. Narain will be most watched, riding on a billion dreams next only to the Cricket World Cup aspirations that Indians religiously have and pray for. We will still be looking out for FF1 cars!

Despite of his age, Narain is a fast driver and a quick learner, so the challenges before him in terms of the change in technology and rules should be easy for him. Adaptability is his forte. Doing what he likes is one of his hallmarks and inside the cockpit he forgets the world around him.

It would be unwise to expect any miracle from HRT on day 1, nevertheless, it might be that he should look for opportunities wasted by those ahead of him and for sure, we will be a happy lot. Now waiting for the Bahrain GP to kick start the circus as we all know for this year!

Will be back with more!

Mobile Advertising and the future!

The mobile advertising is in its nascent stage, but is loaded with immense possibilities and endless opportunities. While the media managers are trying to decipher the way people are responding, the fact remains that it will be one of the biggest advertising platforms in the near future.

The main reason of course is the reach that it can offer with a push of an SMS. For that part Short Messaging Service has now become Sales Messaging Service. Sometimes I do wonder where I left them the number to message me. While Indian public is not too keen on being proactive to being private we are ok with a few messages coming in from almost everybody who is selling.

Now the advent of the Chinese mobile handsets with features that match the best selling iPhone or a Nokia or a Blackberry, promises to take the mobile advertising platform to a new high. Innovations in the form of applications and other software make the usage of the mobile phone convenient and more user-friendly. The most successful applications will be those who can engage the audience in its effort to create an addictive and loyal base of subscribers.
Apart from this a look at the telecom industry in India would clearly suggest the fall in the rate of Voice platform across the local/STD and ISD platforms, and this will push the operators to launch a massive VAS platform across the board. It’s going to be the days of VAS though pay per user variable will be in vogue.

The latest BCG report on telecom industry in BRIC and Indonesia makes an interesting reading when it says that the next set of users would be introduced to internet through the mobile rather than the computer. Now that’s really a great phenomenon in the making especially in India. Internet mobility has the power to redefine the idea of broadband and bandwidth. With the advent of 3G, the opportunities are going to but only increase in terms of what the bandwidth can offer and also engage the users interactively at the palm of his hand. This would throw up a quite a new wave of advertising opportunities and learning opportunities for both the brands and also the consumer.

The best part of the mobile phone is that it’s a very personal thing for the owner. Then of course the reach is instant unless the mobile is not in his hands. It can be timed and more so it can be targeted so very easily and also be seen that how fast they respond and an SMS a minute old is a lost thing for ever. That’s the pace that the industry will be driven at, they miss your SMS and you lose a customer. This is where context and timing plays an important role. Though we might find it intrusive, it is here to stay. Chances are that we might find sms telling us a new café in the neighbourhood at 7 pm or 8 pm so that there is enough time for us to really explore.

Then there is the social networking which we are a part of whether we like it or not. Our days are getting organized by Facebook alerts and twitter tweets. Its no more personal diaries now. We find the best of brands in the Facebook. Recently Vodafone celebrated 1 million fans in the Facebook, that’s a remarkable achievement by any standard.

Now the big screen is being squeezed into the smaller one albeit a 7 incher ipad or say a Chinese make Olive and sometimes with Samsung galaxy’s and Nokia. An artificially created aura around the social networking has taken its toll with us looking for updates at every other second with a ping or twitter updates. It’s a fight for one-upmanship in all the spheres of social networking and this will replace all the communication aspects in the days to come, people will say I told you so on fb and twitter. So much is possible.

And people have now started adding applications every other minute to their mobile phone with a hope that they are not gonna be selective about being on chat or fb or orkut, they are infact looking for one application which will host all these and more on their mobile screen. All this at a cost that they are no more private entities.

Will discuss this and more in the next blog. Till then happy working!!!

A day to remember, one day at Navjyoti…

Getting in touch with Sunny is a delight after a long time. I have never ever thought I would be in Delhi sometime of my life. But life is one play and we are all actors.

Coming home to the point, this Sunday I was at Maharaja Agrasen College in Rohini Sec 22. A long trip on the Delhi metro and then on the RTV chugging along to reach me near the bus station and then reaching the wonderful campus. I liked the architectural style which is one of the hall mark of any institution which is world class. Having been to some of the most prestigious institutions I think the architectural design in a sense creates an aura for the students studying there.

Banners and posters welcomed people shouting aloud about the event… Navjyothi Community College, welcomes you, Seminar on career counseling, NCC welcomes Dr. Kiran Bediji, all hand made and one could see the passion and interest it had generated in it.

I called Sunny and then joined in the hall while he was busy giving finishing touches to speaker profiles. The hall was all buzzing with chatter among those kids and some volunteers getting them to streamline them.

Few minutes later the Chairman of the college Dr. Garg arrived and took to the stage and the event started off formally with an announcement that Dr. Kiran Bediji is on her way and expected anytime.

It was left to two young people to manage the show. One was Nisha and another Mubarak the master of ceremonies in English and Hindi. When Nisha addressed the crowd as ‘Guys’ in English, I felt a strong similarity in the way I usually addressed my students earlier. Guys for me meant they had to be ready for the class.

So it had begun well with them announcing what’s in store for them that day.

Ms. Neetu took the stage and started the discussion and put questions on what the day is all about. As the question were fielded and answers generated by the time the students got warmed up, Kiran Mam as she was lovingly called arrived.

For me to see an icon I had always looked upto was a dream come true. It was a historical person I was meeting. Someone who broke the shackles of being the first Woman IPS officer in the independent India. Means so much to the people who should have brought her up and the society as a whole. And the Tihar experiment as I would name it was next to Experiment with truth for me. We haven’t seen Gandhiji in flesh and blood so it is always a part of history, but then here is a person who has challenged the norms or so called norms and lent it a stamp of distinction in making prison a reformative place which the law makers initially visualized. It was bonus to hear her talk how she did that and what actually led her to do what she does always the best way.

Clad in Pyjama kurta and her signature hair style, she looked so down to earth, so motherly and so much compassionate about her presence. Exchanging pleasantries with the people and finally to the stage, Kiran Mam had arrived for all of us. Looking at her from close quarters, I always had wanted to listen to her when she was in Coimbatore but unfortunately it had never happened or I get to know the next day from the Hindu second page that she was at GRD answering a volley of questions.

So the programme had the traditional lighting of the lamp, and when it was getting lit a little slowly, in a sense of humour unmatched, Kiran Bedi said its Navjyoti and it takes time. A crackle of laughter filled the hall. Then it was again the students. There were students who took to the stage for the first time n their life to speak English till then an alien and sophisticated language for them.

One student started well and then the inevitable happened she forgot, a scene that reminded me of my first ever recitation competition way back in sixth standard and what follows is the crying. Never the less these kids were competing not against anybody but against themselves which is breaking the barriers of self, that which is built around them by the places of living and so many other social factors. I think that by reaching out to the stage they had made appoint break that self imposed exile and that they can do it. The first step has been made and now the journey for sure will continue.

It showed the innocence and sometimes the right they could have over their very own Kiran Mam. I did feel these kids were lucky to be around someone like Dr.Kiran Bedi at this age which I believe will be a positive pointer in their lifetime. Going forward, this impression of being a part of the initiative of Dr. Kiran Bedi is going to stick on to them in all parts of the life that is the biggest outcome for the initiative called NCC.

Some more on stage made it happen with how it had transformed life and gave them new found confidence in the way they looked at life and one even hinted that they were not missing the college to their regular counterparts in the city. Almost all said they were happy at the place of learning. Quite a compliment to the people who run the institution and also the faculty who have imparting them not just the syllabi but the way to live and take life. Lot of people who spoke reflected the enthusiasm that they are infected with the movement called Navjyoti. Well they did end their speech with I am Navjyoti which underlines a greater impact of being a part of a revolution none the less.

Some snippets of the speeches included ‘try try try again but not cry cry cry’… this when Nisha the girl who forgot her speech was crying. Some message that. One more was Dr. Kiran Bedi she is a flower and a star forever…

There was an inspirational video with achievements of some of the sporting heroes and how they had to push in everyday in their life to get to that achievement. Carl Lewis for example won 4 gold at the Olympics not just a fluke it meant every day practice for how long years only he knew. Those medals are results of those untiring efforts made day in and day out. Some of my favorites found place including Carl Lewis, Bubka, Schumacher and Pele.

The next speech was by the chief guest was an inspirational one when I also got to know who Maharaj Agrasen was. That it was a 5000 year old legacy was a great surprise, and more than that he was keen to touch on the cultural heritage of the country in terms of secularism and other things he brought to the discussion was a worthy one. He went on to add he was willing to give the campus free for any activity like this and also announced a scholarship for the meritorious needy students during the course of his speech which was very kind and generous of him.

He also reminded students to bring glory to their home, village, city and country starting with home. A very touching way for an academician who was also a political figure before he took the plunge to education and charity. May the likes of Dr. Garg’ tribe increase.

The next was Kiran Bedi Mam herself, personally I was waiting to see and hear and feel the voice. And I wasn’t disappointed when she started off thanking the students and especially so because if not for them this would not have happened. He went on to relate how she does things with minimum resources at disposal and stretch it to the max. It had happened at all levels in her lifetime. Be as a student, studying to the max, playing to the max, be the IPS officer do to the max with the minimum resources and of course the life changing aspect at the Tihar jail to do the max with the minimum.

She went on to give what she called the gurumantra of her life ‘be Samajdhar’ only those who have been that were successful. She was once that samajdhar student, a samajdhar daughter, a samajdhar police officer and the list goes on. She also underlined the importance of reading and studying, rather updating, reflecting how she had continued herself after being an IPS officer went on to do a LLB, then a MA then a PhD and then second PhD and then of course decided to write her book. So the same habit continues till day, reading atleast 4 hours a day. She quoted from the Inspirational video which was shown little earlier on having to practice everyday.

She urged the students to continue studying whatever opportunity presented them and how NCC was willing to make it affordable so that they can make it happen in the life. Updating them would be the real power they can have for themselves.

The students too promised to take home the promise of being samajdhar and implement it wherever possible.
As she finished we had a guest who had accompanied Kiran Bedi Mam, one Mrs Nirupama who was introduced to the crowd by Bedi Mam as a representative of India in Tennis, in her days and was an Asian Champion.

She narrated an incident from their timeline when she had defeated Kiran Mam the first year in the quarter finals. But the next year it was different and it was in Calcutta. That day she was humbly taught a lesson as she said that Kiran was indeed the samjadhar as she just had told students. Luckily that day the other Kiran (the sun) was less bright and saved her day. But she had learnt her lesson.

She also had a moment of awe for all of us when she narrated how Kiran Bediji’s mom used to comfort her daughter and also massage her legs when she’s taking rest. I was left wondering how many children get that kind of parents or how many kids deserve it the other way. It was a touching moment very literally when people later told her that every one was almost moist in their eyes.

With that the formal ceremony was over, and ofcourse in between was the felicitation of the speakers who had taken time off their Sunday and a well deserved token of appreciation with the book ‘I Dare!’ signed by Dr. Kiran Bedi and ofcourse a Thulasi Plant was given. I wanted to know the significance of presenting the Thulasi Plant though I do know that it’s a sacred plant of the Hindu tradition and so dearly loved by Lord Krishna himself.

I also had the opportunity to listen the speakers and Dr. Kiran Mam at the conference hall, wherein people were able to contribute to the way the things can shape up at NCC. Lot of nice ideas and more on how IGNOU was helping the certification etc…

Kiran Mam acknowledges the fact that the team of three people in Navjyoti – were in fact making it happen on their own devising plans and executing them. Call them the three musketeers – taking the mission and vision of the organization forward.

So as the discussion wound up and the speakers waited for the sessions, it was my moment to be introduced to Kiran Mam. Sunny introduced me as a Volunteer from Chyk, and from Coimbatore.

She asked me how I came to know of the days’ events. I told her Sunny had invited me, and as we walked I told her I was well aware of her GRD visits and she said she was going again may be next month.

So it was a dream comes true when I had first spoken to Sunny about meeting Kiran Bedi mam. Also had felt Sunny and the folks were lucky to be a part of such a project.

After Kiran Mam had left, I was back at the places where sessions were going along with Sunny. Some classes had already started and I went to listen to the Hair dressing and beauty, for someone who had thought about this it was a revelation as a career as I was listening to Mr. Rajiv.

One thing I noted was time had gone by me not knowing how fast it had gone by. There are some times when you enjoy doing thing or enjoy some thing time does fly past you by and you won’t know and the same happened.

It was John Milton in his on his blindness who said those also serve that wait and stand, may be I can consider myself like the one to start with.

Thanks Sunny for a wonderful Sunday… there’s so much sun and its rays there – Dr. Kiran Bedi… and literally it has been ray of hope for so many people and Wishing a great success to all that the rays touch on.

Sudama’s take

Lord Krishna’s best celebrated friend is a poor old man, Sudama. They have been childhood friends and they left the ashram to make their own future. Krishna the Lord that he is always was in Sudama’s thought. Sudama also was in ever relentlessly in devotion to his friend.

But then when Sudama got married, he was still leading a poor man’s life. His wife was not at all happy, especially knowing that her husband was the friend of the ruler from Mathura. So she tells him to go and ask for a favour. Every one knows how rich and royal Krishna was. Intimidated though about visiting him at the palace, Sudama takes the road, reaches Mathura to stand at Lord Krishna’s palace.

He tells the guard to he would like to see Krishna and that he is Sudama, his friend. The message reaches the Lord and he comes all the way out of his chamber to welcome his old friend. The Lord has not changed Has he. Nor has his devotee Sudama.

The people are put to so much thinking, how come this poor man makes the Lord come to the gates to welcome him.

As they go to the chamber Krishna makes him sit on the throne, which Sudama thinks is so modest of him to be doing that. As is the custom, Krishna asks Sudama what he has got for him, there is a small packet of parched rice, now duly hidden across his waist, he was so ashamed to give it to Krishna living in all splendour, and majesty. But Lord knows how to play the trick and he almost searched him to part with the gift and he opens it to find the rice and takes it to his mouth and says that’s the best he has ever had.

So in all the best hospitality that can be served Sudama spends sometime and then one day he tells Krishna he wants to get back home.

Krishna wanted to know if he could help Sudama to which he said no. But his wife’s picture came to haunt him. On the other side, he was sure if he had all those things he yearned for then he would forget his Master. So even after Krishna desiring to make amends Sudama takes a no and leaves for his village.

He comes across a fine palatial buiding which he thought was a place he lived in and asks a fellow traveler who lives there, to which he replied Sudama is the owner. Surprised he pushes through the gates and behold his wife fully decked in ornament and jewelery makes her presence.

Sudama knew who had played the game. No he was lost in the game to be remembering the Lord. But Sudama did not lose and he was not swayed a little though he thought his family or wife needed that. He had this wonderful prayer please make me poor so I dont forget you. Might me a little pessimistic, but it serves the purpose for Sudama.

That was one Yuga and we live in another. If only Krishna was our friend today. Would we be still Sudama.

RedBull has always been special

Going from their first year take on French to today’s Siingapore GP Press Release from RedBull has always been great…

Here reproduced for you (Courtesy Indiamotorsports.com and Redbull racing Press Release)

They’re the unsung heroes of the F1 world, who really control matters on track. So what would happen: IF F1 WAS RULED BY… THE TRACK MARSHALLS

1. What’s with all these different flag colours? In the new world of the Marshal-plan, there’d be just one flag – a bright red one with the words “DO WHAT I TELL YOU TO DO” on it.

2. In the event that your car breaks down at the side of the track, under no circumstances are you, the driver, allowed to push the car. You must wait beside the car until we have finished discussing the nature of your problem, how a similar fate befell Keke Rosberg in 1982 and what we said to him as he flapped his arms in a furious manner as smoke billowed out the back of his car.

3. If a marshal waves a blue flag at you during the race, you MUST pull over. The fact that you are leading the race and the car behind has been lapped is irrelevant. We have waved THE FLAG.

4. If by any chance you are asked to sign a marshal’s vest following a gearbox failure that has just ended your Championship hopes, you are NOT allowed to punch the marshal. This is very bad.

5. It shall be fully within a marshal’s rights to empty the entire contents of a fire extinguisher overthe engine and into the cockpit of your car, even if your race-ending problem was caused byrunning out of fuel. If you are still in the cockpit, it’s still allowed.

6. In the event that a TV camera happens to focus on a marshal’s stand he is allowed to wave any damn flag he chooses, as his mum thinks he looks very handsome waving flags on TV, especially that red and yellow one that everyone thinks is something to do with supporting Fernando Alonso.

7. Under new rules, any element of a car entered in the race which should become detached from the vehicle during said race is deemed salvage. In short, if it ain’t bolted on it’s mine. If the chief engineer wants it back he can bid on eBay just like everyone else.

after a loooooong time…

I have moved to Delhi even before I could really taste the Mumbai culture and the place courtesy my work. It would please anyone to be in the thick of things, especially at the capital city of their country, but when I came in it was Hot Hot and so hot I was sweating like I am gonna lose all my excess weight.

Slowly got used and then the days had gone so fast I am writing this blog almost two months into living in Delhi. Settled I must say and more so because of the work, I feel little busy and help myself with the odd leisure time I have.

Will write more often on Delhi and its traffic, the capital and the common wealth games and we have spicy things to write about.

Let me tel you only this, Delhiites spend ere half their lifetime on the road literally in the traffic of Delhi roads.

See ya and catch up…

Mumbai two weeks on…

Very fast paced city, and am looking to learn mumbai from ‘Shantaram’ the book i am reading now. trains and buses are on the move 24 hours. the metros are the lifelines. ever full of life till the mid of the night.

i had the experience of traveling by train, i had put up at Praveen’s place (thanks so much praveen), my brothers classmate and my schoolmate too, at Thane, in Brahmand, very far from even Thane station. I take a rick to the station and then my journey starts to do a V trip to Dadar and from there to Andheri and be sure to get to the western part of it… same way as in chennai where metros divide the city into two.

mumbai is pretty wide and afar if i may call it. so its not easy doing a two wheeler ride and so almost 90% of the population take to metros and then amply aided by BEST buses and rick and taxis afterward… depends if you have luggage and the distance you could opt for a rick or a taxi…

it presents the best of both world, hard core engineering happening so fast apace and then the slum are also adjacent looks like no one bothers about it.

i liked traveling the BEST buses not so crowded when I had traveled short distances though, very neat the way people wait for them and board and more importantly move to the front to get down, i dont know if we can have it the same way in my hometown in Coimbatore especially our place Vadavalli to the city…its always full of capacity…

one thing which struck me was that both the trains and the Best buses were loads of advertising inventory for transit advertising, some BEST even TVs running Best Channels, the programme included some recipe modules, then some jokes and some CSR tvcs. not bad considering if you are travelling 30 minutes.

the mumbaikar spirit was introduced to me earlier in the days some 5 years back when the rains poured and made it a stand still life on june. and ofcourse then the bomb blasts always are a mark of mumbaikar spirit. I see them in action in every pav baaji stall and every paan stall and then ofcourse in the drivers of the rickshaw and taxi…

life is full if surprises when the ricky driver gives me 2 rupees back when i pay him 15, sort of not even imaginable in my hometown Coimbatore.

people shout for me “side! side!” when i almost miss a stop on the metro, (I have never figured even now which side u got to be waiting to get down on the metro for every station.) they were so helpful, i thought someone would have pulled the chain 🙂

once i did miss the regular stop in an fast train inspite of the “side! side!” shouts and guess what i am some 15 kms away from my place… and the people really take care to set me in place and see me board the train backward and also the side i got to get down.

its really been going great except that i could not find accommodation so easily… but a broker turned friend has some good news for me. nice person he turned out to be. hopefully that’s settled now. in between i had to stay in a hotel too, in andheri for a couple of nights, the first time it poured and i was shaken every one hour by the whistle of the wind, i could notice that quite a few places don’t have windows just railings only. only solace was it was not that windy that night… i had to watch the rain whenever i woke up.
