Mahabharatha – the epic unparalled has be retold umpteen number of times and we have this coming up by authors who give it a perspective that’s new and sometimes create a story in a story. Here Aditya in his foreword very clearly says its an attempt to see a modern era description that was set in the Mahabharatha days. May be this war happened and it still is happening in a different way.

The Kurukshetra war was going nowhere, and the reason was both sides were doing well for themselves. The story opens on 10th day when Bhishma is laid to a bed of arrows by his favourite grandson Arjuna with Shikandi propping up as a shield in front.

This narrative is by three characters, Yudhishtra, Radheya – Karna as we know and Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna. Aditya weaves a wonderful narration taking us through the minds of Yudhishtra, Radheya and Abhimanyu. A stark contrast in terms of their mental makeup and how they look at the war from their positions makes for an interesting read.

A fast paced story of the three days at war that actually changes the course of the result makes for a nice gripping read. The authors authority on the subject comes through the descriptions of the war field the people and the special ways they have been celebrated.

The author shows a mirror in terms of the characters trying to assert themselves even in the face of immoral and ambitious search for glory. Sometimes as they say its not the means but the end. Goaded by that there is a lot of unethical war room strategies and execution that are there, like the way Abhimanyu is killed by everyone you can think of on the Kaurava side.

The best is how the mental make up of all the three characters show up in times of crisis and how they react to the same situation and well everyone had an agenda of their own as much as we do it today.

A nice read and well presented with first person account makes it easy to go with the flow. At times you are in the battle field, at the council hall meetings and walking alongside the characters. Loved the simple and effective prose which actually makes you feel like you are being with the characters.

A classic retelling without losing the charm of the characters, riding with their ambitions, anxieties, fear and sometimes with a hope for the war to be over. Things could have gone either way and this 13th day sets the course for the next 5 days when the war is completed. If you are fond of mythology and its retelling, you will need to read this book.

What India reads! A page on Flipkart app

The book lovers have a new tool, well a page on their book section on their favorite shopping app  from folks at Flipkart. The book was the first love of flipkart, well things have changed but then they have tried to please you the book reader with this page!

“What India Reads” is all about what you read or would like to read. The app is designed basis genres for now and will soon feature what celebrities and authors read as well.

The idea of the app is to make readers aware of what books are right at the top and also to help them discover books they might have not known of earlier. There are sections to it, the genres and you could check out the books on the shelf, read about it and well get to buy them ofcourse.

The chances are you can check out the best of the titles and the promising ones, as you see the title rise to prominence in a day or so post launch.

There is an all book offers that will let you know what are the offers that you have at the present moment.

I was wondering on a title Aarushi under Autobiographies, may be it was a a mistake so i clicked on it to find the Autobiography titles there. Not Aarushi.

The pages instead of going to normal pages at Flipkart could be better be designed to the flow of the app interface for the What India reads page and continue with the shopping experience. I am thinking native probably because of my work and professional background.

Another aspect could have been that they have a notification for you to check the What India reads page updation of new titles so that I get to go there quite often.

A nice attempt from Flipkart, hope it helps the readers in you and me and as a start it definitely looks nice to have it.

Big Magic – Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert #bookreview

big-magic-creative-living-beyond-fear-400x400

Publisher Bloomsbury Publishing (IN)
ISBN-10 9384898996
Imprint Bloomsbury India
Language English
ISBN-13 9789384898991
Binding Hardcover

This is a beautiful book which makes you relevant for what you are. Quite a engrossing read, and contrary to make you feel flamboyant, it makes you confident about who you are and how you can be yourself create a magic in your life and then spread it out.

This book is classical read, making you better at what you are good at. Though the book has been divided into parts, its an easy read from any page and you will have a match of frequency if may call that when you read. You will feel the words for what they are especially because they are true and infact workable things unlike being sold off as aspirational in a way.

The books is divided into parts – Courage, Enchantment, Permission, Persistence, Trust, Divinity. In each of these parts, the author takes us through personal experiences and stories of the well known and some of those who didn’t want to be well known and gives us a picture of what lie in us, its not that fame or coveted status that the inner urge is looking for. It could be the overcoming of the fear and persist with courage on doing what you want to do without any fear and enjoy doing that.

A very engaging read and you can take time to enjoy the stories and go back to the book at your pace. I think that is an essential trait for a self development or a motivational book. If they can achieve that sense in you that you want to re-read and grasp it for the better the book has achieved its objective. And who doesnt love stories, and for those from the land of story telling, its just a bonus.

Filled with inspirational anecdotes and slice of life incidents it makes you sit up and think afterall it could be possible, well that would be the first step to shedding the fears what ever that could be.

I am sure you will enjoy the read and I must mention that this is the first time I am reading Elizabeth Gilbert and I can see how the other titles must have impacted a lot of people.

I will be failing in my duty if  I dont thank Flipkart for the book and in case you want to check out on a copy for yourself please click here: Big Magic

Brutal by Uday Satpathy – a book review

brutal-book-cover

As you start reading the first page you know you are in for a treat, thriller treat. Somethings in the air and Uday Satpathy makes an awesome start to a tale that gets better as you turn the pages.

As the cover states, this is an author who holds a lot of promise and that coming from none other than Ravi Subramanian, the John Grisham of India is a matter of fact. The book is brutal to the fact that it moves fast and gets you on to the last page. I did this in two train journey of 2 hours each. That’s how gripping it is. Very simple and easy to follow narrative is one of the most important aspects of a three part book. The author holds your attention till the last page and you heave a sigh that it ended but then it has ended so fast.

When you have been through a racy, thriller being with the characters and be in the dark as much they were, you know the author has made his mark. The impressive thing about the novel is its narration and the way it takes turn to deliver the thrilling sensation. Connecting dots and getting to the root of the problem, we have characters that symbolizes that to a great extent, press reporters and a financial analyst turned data analyst.

Stray incidents are not just stray incidents anymore. There might be too much underneath an incident that it never asks for its attention. Such incidents form the basis of this novel.

The characterization of Prakash Sinha and Seema are intertwined to give us two different roads of journalistic perspectives in a way. Working on the minds of these two journalist and getting ahead of the villains if you call them is what the story is all about.

Another aspect is the way the story is set and the very thought that fiction might turn true is one of the biggest plus of this book, there has been a lot of research in the way its is presented and like I said the dots being connected to understand what is in store makes for an interesting and compelling read.

There are lot of characters in this book, though they hold your attention, we could have done with a bit less possibly. The main characters of course have a pivot of their own.

An important and significant mention here is that Brutal is India’s first  crowd sourced and crowd curated book. Bloody Good Books in a initiative of Rashmi Bansal and Niyati Patel and it has started off with a big bang I should say. Having been a fan and an avid reader of Rashmi Bansal I am sure we are headed for better titles and great stories in the future.

Thanks Bloody Good Books for sending a e-copy of the book.

A setting in the armed forces is always an interesting phenomenon, simply because I have been close yet so far. I have seen some of them close and yes it rings a bell.

This story Mistress of Honour by Bhaavna Arora has the right mix of those attitude which are pretty reflective of the armed forces. The Story revolves around the life and times of the characters and has a reflective poise to it with the background in Operation Bluestar as a intrinsic part of the story.

Thats when the hero and the lady protagonist meet each other. The story is well paced and the situations around the characters makes for an interesting read.

The characterization of the Potnis and Pansy in their different worlds and the passion towards career and the how they try to bridge their world makes it an page turning affair.

The story goes on a nice trail even when the past is narrated and holds the reader and makes you walk the scene beside the characters. The author has taken due efforts in understanding the background and it shows in the book and the way the story unfolds.

The story goes on with the kids too, a similar plot of the love and courtship. its got all speed and passion and narratives all blended in a style.

All in all a neat fast paced read, and the characters have a depth of their own and the story moves on as you keep turning pages. The author has very minimal characters and makes it a success in a way that the story is told.

My rating 3.5 Stars out of 5

Democrazy by Atulya Mahajan #bookreview

a

Atulya Mahajan takes you on a roller coaster ride with the politics of the day in a satire that you will enjoy till the last page of the book is turned.

Aptly titled Democrazy, it is the story of how the mighty and the powerful take the voting gullible public at large for a ride and continue to play God.

I think the book is a classic representation of the electoral politics that we call ourselves as democracy. Except its actually the crazy with the ‘z’ which makes it true.

For all its goodness and its superlative ability to uphold the citizens right, democracy can be take to task if you are skillful and more importantly know how to play it right.

The book has an array of characters which I am sure you can easily identify with, make a pardon there is a disclaimer boss that its all the authors imagination.

There is the Badi Sarkar who wants the Chote Sarkar to be the PM, dont guess who it is, bit the fact is Chote Sarkar is interested in eating icecreams of different flavours.

The characters of the book come straight out of entertainment industry if you ask me especially the news with a nation anchor BB who wants to know everything under the sun relegating the Saas bahu serials to the back burner for the active and know all citizens who want to know it all.

There is a social media activist on twitter who helps his mother get out of an incedent, and then there is a big capitalist all get together to get the democracy working like crazy.

All of them have a goal and that is power never mind it corrupts absolutely. The people taken for a ride across is not significant because they are made ready to be taken for a ride!

With elections in the background and the cacophony of speeches barbs and counter barbs and also the trp hungry TV shows its a classic mockery of the democratic traits that we harbour as sacred.

This is very well set in Indian background and for once after a long time that the election is over I am wondering if the book is a true story!

Highly recommended for a dutiful citizen so that he will be convinced to take off on the election day as if his voting mattered!

The House That BJ Built by Anuja Chauhan – a book review

the-house-that-b-j-built-400x400-imae6zqyqg4tnprf

Publisher Westland
ISBN-10 9385152181
Book Type Fiction Book
Imprint Westland
Number of Pages 433 Pages
Publication Year 2015 May
Language English
ISBN-13 9789385152184
Binding Paperback

Let me start with a confession that I am reading Anuja Chauhan for the first time.

This book is a journey of the minds and the machinations of every character unfolding in front of us in a way that you can only imagine. All about the characters that occupy the house that BJ built.  The brashness of the language, adds a certain authenticity to the character’s lives is unforgettable. In case you have lived in New Delhi and you would want to get back there for atleast the way the action happens at No. 16 Hailey’s then this is a trip worth taking.

There is an eclectic mix of the bollywood, the family saga and the sisters in tow and ofcourse the big house in the plot. You would be a witness to many a whims and fancies and start thinking through the minds of the characters.

Probably that’s one of the biggest traits that the author has and makes you go with the flow.

The story of Bonu Singh  and whether she would give away her part of the hissa for the sale is the story, with her past especially her mom’s words ringing in her head.

You will enjoy the Punjabi dialect and the whole some family story of the sisters and the two characters in Bonu and Samar. Pick up this book for its sheers story telling ability and keeping you engrossed with the mind reading ability of the author.

The Delhi girls attitude and the Bollywood’s touch in the making of the characters would make you think if you are watching a bolly wood movie. Quite a possibility that this could even be a film in the making, well there is already a film in the making in the story!

Overall a nice read I would rate 3 stars out of 5 for the style of the author where she does the story telling very effortlessly. I had only this if there were too many characters in the book and may be we had too many stories nevertheless.

The book was sent to the blogger for a review by Flipkart. You can buy the book here: http://www.flipkart.com/house-b-j-built-english/p/itme6ahbmkhezb2k

Capturing Wildlife Moments in India by Ashok Mahindra – a book review

Image3

‘A fascinating and insightful read’ is an understatement by any yardstick given the book is full of pictures that tell stories that are beyond our reach in literal sense. Every photograph is worth its weight in gold in Capturing Wild Life Moments in India by Ashok Mahinda.

It sets free the traveller in every reader and also shows the importance of the marvels that nature has produced. It’s those wonderful and invaluable sights that have been frozen for eternity that will make us sit up and question ourselves. Especially if you can read ENDANGERED printed alongside.

A question that pops up on my mind is this: how much we take our species for granted so much that we don’t care for any other which has been an integral  part of nature, the eyes pop up when we see some of even the Asiatic Elephants have been marked endangered.

Some of the pictures were really very engaging in terms of the angle and they have a nice way of emoting and look as if they are talking to us.

Ashok Mahindra with his work has done a great service to those wonderful creatures who otherwise would not be able to express themselves. Some of the night shots are really classy and I wonder how the author had been waiting to watch and catch them on his camera.

The work is a reflection of dedication and painstaking effort of the author photographer  in being at home to capture those versatile beings at their momentous best. It provides a window of opportunity for us to realise the significance of their shelter and appreciate efforts to sustain their survival.

I would be not flattering if I say you will have had a roundtrip to some of the most amazing hideouts of those magnificent animals and am sure you would want to make your own trip sometime.

Somethings are so glaring for example the National animal of our country is an endangered species so much for our sense of nationalism. It pricks your conscience and surely the author has a winning edge in making us sit up. I think that when an author wins.

All the images in the book has its own story and some facts.  Sample this excerpt:

Elephants are herbivorous and move in herds led and dominated by a mature female elephant. Theirs is a matriarchal system and the herd is made up of mothers, daughters, sisters, and aunts, with all decisions usually taken by the oldest adult female. Males leave the herd early and only return in order to mate with the females.

Absolutely beautiful book and is a great testimony to a social activist / photographers way to showcase some things that we always took for granted – Freedom to be (here for the animals)

Here is one more pic:

Not A Word About Love by Hana Goldberg #bookreview

The flight of imagination is the start of a journey and especially in a book if served with the touch of sense and sensuality, it  is a great achievement.

Gripping. Makes you move pages. Takes you on a ride. With thoughts. Wild and free. Sometimes practical. Looking back. Review yourself. Introspect. Blast from the past. Reminiscence.

Well some of the sentences I put to use to imitate the language that the author engages in making the reader read through the emotions. It has a sincere approach to a carefree woman’s revelry in her thoughts and an uninhibited display of her sensibilities.

You will go on a trip to Thailand and live alongside with her moments, thoughts and actions and  be a witness to all that is happening to her, and sometimes share her thoughts and mindless rants. The water would touch your toes on the sea shore and the winds would caress your face as you ride along the bike.

Meet Maya who is almost at the tipping point in her life, and she is bored of the routine that stalks her life. Wants a change and take a ticket to Thailand and the story goes right from the time she checks in at the airport and then goes till she gets to see the co-passenger at his office.

Sensual to the character, with the background of Thailand, the story of Joe, the man in this story and Maya’s own fight for sensibility and sometimes for her wild imaginations, Not a word about love captures the essence of the longings and sensuality in a very subtle manner and that it happens outside of marriage doesn’t deter Maya in her quest to release her identity from what she has built around her.

At some places, we get to see the human side which transcends with the emotions of the characters beyond morality and sometimes gets into the practical outlook on life. This is a definite page turner making you think whats up next. Has a humorous take on life and makes for a wonderful gripping read.

Hana takes us through a gritty journey of emotions and frank expressions of self in Maya and traverses us through a mixed road of family, attachments, relationships both success and failures, and of course through the mind of a scriptwriter, who just wanted to be unleashed off her own inhibitions and live carefree in the moment.

Pick this title up and revel in a different world with Maya, that much I can vouch for. Fast paced and fluid the narration makes for an easy read and am sure you will finish this in one session for sure. The best part is the author has the reader under her control at all times never wavering in its style and going till the last page.

The title is a great one given the story and the misgivings that we attribute to the word Love.

Happy to be introduced to Hana Goldberg through this work and Tomoson for making it happen.

Exide Life – My Money Book – My Financial planner

We used to have a diary, well I do keep receiving one from my not so digitally inclined clients who think yes the new year is heralded with one diary and I have had the habit of having diaries over the years, I have one from 1998, well that was the year I passed out of my college. Time flies, and things have taken a giant steps.

So it was a bit of delight coupled with amusement when I saw the Exide LIfe My Money Book. Hmm a clean neat utility stuff.

mymoneybook

I should admit its been a long time writing these information on paper. It was  revealing on how the money-wise thing looked for me. Now that made me do a bit of homework and some more papers are ready to be signed.

I loved the way it has been designed with the customer in mind and the details that matter, well we used to have all these kinda stuffed in one page. Yes all these.

So here goes the 5 best things about it.

#1 Life Insured : All your insurance policies right from yours to your dependents everyone’s details in fact detailed. So you wont miss the dates and the time in case you need to send in your annual subscription.

#Fact: I got to know you had so many types of Insurance policies well the Home wala though I have heard, it was new for me in the sense that we would love to keep track of it and be reminded every year.

#2 Lockers : You have a page dedicated for Lockers, this is new and is good to add to the information.

#3 Loans: There is a section for loan details, and it is again divided into Home,  Auto and Personal loans.

#4 Savings Section: You have detailed page for Mutual Funds, those not so cool Public Provident Funds, National Pension Scheme etc.

#5 One book: Well this is one book that will help you write your will if you may! You know where you are and how much is your asset and your liabilities in a nutshell that actually is telling you your worth.

#My expectation: Get a page to set financial goals for the next year – esp from the pages that will reduce the loans and add more to savings or buying a property or a new vehicle.  I think that will add the charm of looking at the dates and also get the priorities right.

Or get a page to set personal goals like No credit cards or less credit cards!

It was a great way to analyse the financials personally if you ask me and made me think twice on how I should be plan, quite my Financial planner!

One last thing the designer in me was all praise for the visual layout and the usage for font and clear demarcation of subtle colours in red and blue. Loved the cover design too.

Thanks Exide for the My Money Book!
